Between all of the designer shakeups and the shift towards a "see now, buy now" system, it can be dizzying to remember what season we're actually in. But New York Fashion Week proved that designers are agreeing on a few things at the moment — the most palpable idea being a push for fashion that is capital-F fun.

"I think this season has been about clothes that are happy, or that make women happy," said Tome designer Ryan Lobo. "There's a return to joy, frivolity and optimism on the runways." During NYFW, we saw this exuberance in bold, primary-hued stripes, silver lame, statement earrings and playful robes. Here, nine trends that ruled the runways in the Big Apple.

PRIMARY STRIPES

Who doesn't love a great stripe? This season, designers traded out the standard Breton version for bold rugby ones in bright primary colors that channeled a Mondrian vibe at Proenza Schouler and Opening Ceremony.

HIGH-FASHION ROBES

This is some next-level leisurewear, folks. It's hard to say whether this trend started on the runways or in the streets, but robes — whether cozy and knit (see: Lacoste and Band of Outsiders) or glam and mink a la Alexander Wang — have been absolutely everywhere this season, making it clear that comfort is king for spring.

RADICAL RUFFLES

Every flounce counts for spring. Whether light and frothy or structured and sculptural, cheerful frills gave us all the thrills at 3.1 Phillip Lim, Zimmerman, and more.

EXTREME EARRINGS

Whether worn solo or as a pair, fashion has been all about statement earrings recently; and the ear party continues for spring with shoulder-grazing door-knockers (as seen at Altuzarra and Delpozo). The bigger and bolder, the better.

COOL WHITE SWEATSHIRTS

Streetwear continues its reign for spring, with designers showing updated takes on a classic athleisure staple: the white sweatshirt. Vera Wang's version with drop shoulders and elongated sleeves was anything but basic.

ALL PINSTRIPE EVERYTHING

Another trend equally popular in the streets and on the runways: crisp pinstripe shirting with a creative twist, which we saw from the likes of Claudia Li, Adam Selman and the dynamic design duo at Monse.

SHOCKING PINK

Nothing against soothing neutrals, but who can resist the mood-boosting effects of neon brights? Highlighter pink looks electrified the spring runways, appearing at Jason Wu, Alexander Wang and Sies Marjan.

BEST WESTERN

Between all of the fringy leather jackets, cowgirl hats and bandanas we've seen thus far, it's clear that designers are looking West for spring — and the result is more wearable (read: less costume-y) than you might think.

SILVER STREAK

It doesn't get more glam than liquid silver lame. Whether shown for night or day, designers from Marc Jacobs to the Mulleavy sisters at Rodarte were all about shiny metallics.
